Who is Rengin Isik?
Rengin Isik is a New York State Licensed Mental Health Counselor. After living abroad for several years, she decided to continue her life in Istanbul, one of her favorite cities. She has her B.A. from Bogazici University with a high honor degree in Psychology. Right after graduation, Rengin Isik had decided to try the corporate life to have a different experience. It took her only one year to realize that what she really wants was to follow her true passion of becoming a psychologist. Currently, she teaches at a private university, conducts workshops and trainings, and has her private practice. She also has been working on her private research on family genograms.
What training and experience she has in the field?
Rengin Isik has her M.A. and an Ed.M. in Psychological Counseling from Columbia University, New York. While she was studying at Columbia University, she started to counsel people with substance abuse and alcohol issues, facilitated group therapy sessions, and acted as a peer counselor for young adults with variety of issues.
After graduating in 2008, she received Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy training at the Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in Philadelphia and worked as a Mental Health Counselor for three years. Between 2008 and 2010, she provided Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy sessions for a research project at the Psychiatric Institute of New York. Concurrently, she worked with individuals and couples of varying ages and issues at College of Staten Island, City University of New York. She was also an adjunct lecturer for the Department of Psychology, at the same university.
What is her specialization?
She has had the chance to work with a diverse group of individuals, who are going through common life challenges including stress, anxiety, depression, adjustment to life transitions, relationship difficulties, self-esteem, body image and career concerns. She has specialized in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and multicultural counseling. She has been providing psychotherapy services to people from all age groups, different ethnicities and religious affiliations.
What is her approach to psychotherapy?
Rengin Isik sees psychotherapy as a road trip. During this journey, the individual is behind the wheel. She/he decides where to go, when to go and with what speed. While the individual has total control, the psychologist chooses to sit on the adjacent seat, to provide support, encouragement and often challenge the individual to think deeper.
Her goal is to assist individuals in overcoming the feeling of being stuck. Rengin Isik provides a setting that is non-judgmental, emphatic and understanding, which helps individuals to feel safer to explore various areas in their lives, and feel empowered.
